McGill-Branch House
A Private 1850s Greek Revival Home in Historic Petersburg
This private 1850s Greek Revival home is just minutes from Old Town’s restaurants and shopping and one block from Poplar Lawn Park. Featuring fast WiFi and dual-zone central AC/heat, the home offers modern comfort while maintaining its historic charm. The newly renovated first and second floors provide a stylish and inviting space, accommodating up to three guests—perfect for a couple plus one or two singles.Built in the 1850s Captain Edward B. Branch (later Major Branch) purchased this property in 1862 and lived here while serving as the Confederate quartermaster for Petersburg during the Civil War. Given Petersburg’s strategic importance as a supply and transportation hub, Major Branch played a significant role in managing war materials and troop logistics, as documented in the National Archives. After the war, Branch became Petersburg’s superintendent of schools. In 1882, he partnered with Governor William Cameron to reshape the Petersburg Board of Education, appointing nine Readjuster supporters (six white and three black). This led to the hiring of black teachers, the removal of 25% of white teachers, and the appointment of black principals over white teachers—actions that had profound political and social impacts.
